This enchantment causes any rope, up to a length determined by the power of the caster, to become sticky and gummy. Anyone seizing the rope has a difficult time letting go, although no residue is left on the hands afterwards. It offers little protection against falling from the rope, being far too weak to overcome gravity, but it is more than enough to slow down and deeply distract anyone trying to climb the rope.

It has proven especially effective in marine battles and sieges, when cast on rigging or climbing ropes, causing enemy sailors and soldiers to become far slower and sometimes dislodge themselves entirely from their position. A powerful enough wizard can effectively reduce a ship's speed and maneuverability to almost nothing using this spell.

Despite that the effect is largely an illusion, some say it can be removed by rubbing oil over the hands, although whether this is simply a placebo or actually works is up for debate. When the spell fades however, it's worth keeping in mind that your ropes are now covered in slippery, flammable oil.
