The blackwood tree comes in several varieties which can be found in different locations throughout the lands, but one of the more prized or feared is the Wizardsfoul Blackwood. The gnarled, narrow branches of this tree grow only where a volcanic eruption has happened recently, and don't last long once other plants start to move in.
When cut, the branches can be lit and burned for an extraordinarily long time, burning with a low but clear light for weeks or even months on end. Unfortunately unless the room is well ventilated, the fumes can build up and create a sort of narcotic cloud which puts people into a euphoric trance.
Unless forcefully dragged away from the flickering brand, those so affected will quickly forget to eat, drink and sleep, often perishing within days. Even if removed, they will try to convince themselves and others to let them breathe the scented smoke again, just for a little while, but the result is usually the same.
So despite the obvious value in a light source that can last years if carefully trimmed, the burning of these branches is forbidden in most lands, especially indoors.
