This good quality but otherwise unassuming round shield was forged by glacier valley dwarves during their war with frost giants from the peaks above them. Graven around its bronze rimmed circumference is the phrase "Gurzuk Mat Burukken Gulthuck", which, roughly translated, means "Pick On Someone Your Own Size" followed by an obscure obscenity.
When the shield is struck, the shieldbearer's next attack has the same attributes of whatever last hit the shield, assuming it survives. If a giant's club strikes it, so does the next blow from the owner of the shield have the same power and do the same damage as a giant's club in addition to whatever damage it would normally do, even if they use but a willowy reed to deliver it.
This power isn't restricted to physical attacks - magical attacks, fire, lightning, even acid will be transferred to the wearer's weapon. The effect only lasts for one swing, whether or not it hits. It also works no matter how hard the attack on the shield was, or whether or not it was seriously intended to do damage.
If the shieldbearer drops or lets go of their weapon or the shield at any time while it is "charged", the effect dissipates instantly. It doesn't absorb or transfer passive damage, as that suffered by falling from a height for example. Effects are not transferred to missile weapons.
